I Am A Raver

“I Am A Raver” is probably DJ Rankin’s most popular mix. It might be considered the quintessential DJ Rankin mix because it contains all of the elements that are commonly associated with his style: A catchy main song with sped-up snippets of other tracks layered on top, and not quite beat-matched. The result is a deliriously hyperactive oddity that has been a popular download for more than two years.

This is one of Rankin’s very early mixes, created with far more enthusiasm than technical skill. And because of its uniqueness and continuing popularity, many people believe that Rankin’s skill as a DJ never progressed beyond this level. Rankin’s more recent mixes show that he has developed both musically and technically in the years since.

    Youre reference to his skill as a DJ is completely irrelevant seeing as being a DJ has zero to do with speeding up mp3s on basic computer software and layering them over each other.

    If anything this is producing, but that is offensive to real producers.

    Actually, some well-known DJs do use computer software change the speed and pitch of digital music files and layer them over each other. Take a look at the Ableton Live forums.

    I hope this isn’t going to beecome a “real DJs don’t use computers” debate. As far as I’m concerned, real DJs don’t debate what being a real DJ is.

    That’s not my point at all. DJing is a performance thing, playing in clubs and basically, playing songs, be it on vinyl, mp3 or whatever. I know DJs use Ableton live.

    DJ Rankin made all these songs on his computer in his bedroom, one at a time. This is production, not DJing, allbeit shit production.

    He DJs as well, at little under 18s nights in Ireland where the kids who have downloaded his music ask their youth clubs to book him, under the dissillusion he’s a famous club DJ. That is a seperate outlet to that making of the songs, which has nothing to do with his skill as a DJ. Saying it does merely perpetuates the myth that dance music is made using turntables.

    I’m not sure that “myth” is especially widespread, and, in fact, some DJs and producers do use turntables in the recording studio.

    I happen to know the difference between a DJ and a producer (an increasingly blurry distinction), and I don’t believe that just because a bedroom DJ records his crude mixes, he’s automatically a producer. I also don’t believe that Rankin intended for anyone else to think that he was “producing” new, original music. New, original *mixes*, perhaps.

    If your intent is to be a DJ, then beatmatching two tracks (even on you computer in your bedroom) is a DJ skill. I stand by my comment, and can only wonder what the outrage would have been had I said his skills as a “producer” had improved. :o

    Use of turntables in the recording stuid is for scratching – people seem to think turntables can create sounds – they can’t, they play records, nothing more.

    The more I look into DJ Rankin the more he pisses me off because I’m finding loads of tracks that haven’t had anything done to them apart from having the filename changed to a new title where DJ Rankin is the artist. Now that certainly isn’t production. It’s theft.

    It should be noted that there’s no proof whatsoever, at this point, that Rankin had anything to do with the songs that have only been renamed. There are several songs on my list that are only credited to “DJ Ranking” (see 4 O’Clock in the Morning) and several more that you can find with DJ Cammy and other DJ’s listed as the artists.

    It’s not difficult for anyone to change a file name or an id3 tag. I suggest that people save their outrage for the things they actually know as fact (especially when our information is coming from the internet).

    I think this anti rankin thing should stop,the chances are this wont settle nothing the but here is my addup:-

    -Dj rankin remix’s music in his room

    -Millions of ppl like his music

    -dj rankin renames the original song for his remix’s (no problem with that really its his remix)

    -millions of ppl like his music

    -The anti-rankin crew also state he’s not a dj therefore he should change his name….

    -millions of ppl STILL like his music

    -pplmake pi**takers of dj rankins work in an attempt to show how bad he is…

    -Millions of ppl still like djrankins music

    -Djrankin the truth video’s takes the p**s out of his remix featuring eminem….

    -People think the songs kicks @$$ and more ppl start to like the music

    -Anti Rankin crew get pi***d and release more video’s about how s*i* djrankin is….

    -Meanwhile other people make videos for djrankins tracks…therefore more people start to search for djrankins music….(but a few ppl may be affected by the anti rankin vids…i dunno about anyone else but i watched em all and still dont care)

    -Millions of people still like djrankins music

    Conclusion:

    It appears that this “anti rankin crew” have no effect whatsoever on the rankin lovers….i can assure you we all know he makes these songs from his bedroom and we all love his gr8 songs anyway so i think this should just stop coz its just stupid and pointless…

    get lost antirankin crew…go and make “the truth” vids about jayz or britneyspears…
