A Falling Star
May 23rd, 2006 by Daniel
This song appears on the Internet credited to DJ Rankin and “DJ Ranking.” While it sounds much like a typical DJ Rankin mix, its authenticity hasn’t been confirmed.
The main song in A Falling Star is actually the 2004 track Alive by Starsplash, which has been sped up with acapella rapping and scratching mixed in. The rap vocal is by Public Enemy’s Chuck D. The phrase “Here we go again” is from the song Bring the Noise and the “Only if I had one more…” rap is from the song Hazy Shade of Criminal. It is possible that Rankin was inspired by Dairymilk Warrior’s 2001 jungle track One More, which also uses the “Only if I had one more…” sample.
The most distinctive feature of this track is the extended scratch sequence. The scratching is fairly advanced, and Rankin has never been known as a scratch DJ, so it’s safe to assume that he did not perform the scratching himself. Most likely, the scratching was a recording that Rankin added on top of Alive.
